従来、インターネットで使用されていた 7 つの gTLD (generic Top-Level Domain) に加え、新たに 7 つの TLD が追加されることになりました。今回、追加されることになった TLD は .info, .name, .biz, .pro, .museum, .aero, .coop です。
ちなみに、TLD には、.jp, .us, .to などのように国に割り当てられた ccTLD (country code TLD) というものも存在します。
